BMS engineers may have many different kinds of daily responsibilities, depending on the project they’re working on and the type of engineering they specialise in. Some of the most common daily responsibilities of these engineers include:

  • devising control panels based on site surveys and existing documentation

  • creating operations and maintenance documents including equipment schedules, points schedules, site reports and descriptions of operations

  • writing bespoke software for each individual BMS project

  • designing software graphics for user interfaces

  • performing electrical installation checks and completing necessary alterations when issues arise

  • completing mechanical installation checks for correct installation and repair if necessary

  • surveying sites to provide current documentation of the site, maintenance quotes or energy savings advice

  • performing commissioning checks, including both pre-commissioning and post-commissioning, to ensure everything is working as intended

  • writing reports for stakeholders and senior management about the work completed, the state of the project as a whole and any other remaining work

  • providing maintenance and service work to pre-existing BMS systems to ensure that all controllers and devices continue to operate smoothly

Skills required for BMS engineering

BMS engineers require many hard and technical skills to perform their jobs accurately and precisely, but they also require softer communication-based skills to interact with larger teams to accomplish their goals. Some of the skills required for this role include:

  • Technical skills: Whichever specialization these engineers focus on, they require technical skills and knowledge of electrical equipment, engineering principles, industry-specific software and BMS installation processes.

  • Teamwork skills: Engineers specializing in BMS work with many different people such as builders and other engineers to complete BMS projects, so they require the skills to work effectively as part of a larger group.

  • Communication skills: These specialists also require the skills necessary to communicate verbal or written information to several different people, to liaise with management about project needs or progress and to relate appropriate project documentation.

  • Diligence: BMS engineers often work to strict project deadlines outlined by the clients they represent. Despite potentially tight turnaround times or large-scale projects, they require the ability to finish projects on time to a high standard.

  • Attention to detail: BMS engineering, like all engineering, is detail-oriented work and requires engineers to pay close attention to everything from project plans and design documents to control panels and system software since each component of the BMS system requires a high level of accuracy.

  • Innovation: These engineers require creativity to confront technical challenges that may arise during projects and to develop new technologies and approaches within the industry.
